The culmination of contemporary theatre

Window of the City goes beyond the peak

The thematic show of China’s 2010 Shanghai World Expo, Window of the City, broke with the format of earlier Expo thematic shows, which relied mainly on large outdoor installations and special effects. It created the first indoor, large-scale spectacle multimedia aerial story theatre, interpreting the Expo theme “Better City, Better Life” in depth and bringing in the human element with an original story of love and care that puts the heart of city life at the centre.

Made with great care for 70 million Expo visitors, Window of the City was positioned as the Expo’s number-one show. It ran every day of the Expo’s 184 days and was a highlight not to be missed. A fresh theatrical concept, a creative team from around the world, a cast chosen one in ten thousand and a sharp, professional production team made it the culmination of contemporary theatre, a production of spectacle, emotion and urban vitality set to rewrite Expo history and bring new visual impact and theatrical aesthetics to world theatre.

The evolution of the city

Theatre reveals the civilisation of the future

“Better City, Better Life” is not only the main theme of this Expo but also points to an important direction in the future evolution of human civilisation. Window of the City is an indoor, large-scale spectacle multimedia aerial acrobatic story theatre that crosses ancient and modern time and breaks regional boundaries. It hopes to fill everyone’s heart with living water, to encourage everyone to be an angel, to open their hearts and cooperate to build a harmonious and better urban life. Created together with the world’s top artists, drawing on the strengths of European theatre and blending European, American and Asian cultures, it was made to measure for the Shanghai World Expo and set a new milestone for Expo performances, bringing a new stage vocabulary and creative impact to world theatre.
